Completely opaque, pure white and patented: Blocker paper from lakepaper is a totally new product for every printer and designer. Without compromising either the type area or the intensity of the colour, absolutely nothing that's printed on one side of a sheet of Blocker paper shows through to the other side. This unprecedented opacity has inspired many designers and printers to invent wholly new applications during the past two years.

Gmund devised a most unusual idea for this uniquely special paper. The Blocker Award debuted and was conferred at this year's annual meeting of the Verband für Druck und Medien (German Association for Print and Media). For the first time in the history of the Gmund Paper Mill, Germany's best natural-paper printers were sought, found and honoured!

The five jurors selected 23 printers out of a field of 243 entrants from Hamburg to Lake Constance. The extensive programme accompanying the award’s presentation included a guided tour of the factory, the festive conferral of the award in the presence of invited guests, and an exhibition of samples printed on Blocker paper.

First prize went to Druckerei Langebartels & Jürgens from Hamburg, which submitted an impressively designed and beautifully printed brochure on the theme of prepress, image and colour optimization, finest-quality papers and varieties of printing. "We were pleasantly surprised by the brilliance and depth of the colours, as well as by the quality of the printing, on this sample printed on lakepaper Blocker. These printers from Hamburg have truly earned the honour of first prize", declared Florian Kohler, Gmund's owner and president. Two second-place prizes were awarded to other printers: one to Meisterdruck in Kaisheim and the other to Zimmermann near Munich. Together with Holger Busch, CEO of the VDMB, the nominees viewed all of the submitted work and brought the evening to an enjoyable conclusion with a convivial get-together.
