Colourless to maximum effect

Striking the right note in interior design

"Non-colours" such as beige, sand, crème, vanilla, or champagne used skilfully can achieve fantastic results. In architecture, for example, small rooms are visually enlarged by lighter shades.

A low ceiling appears higher when painted in a lighter tint than the walls. A ceiling paint extended onto the walls by a border-strip amplifies that effect further.

Increased room depth can be achieved if the background colour is lighter than that in the foreground. Furniture in the same colour encourages this impression.

A space in nude-shades seems airy and uplifting, accents of intense colour placed moderately can provide an understated elegance with a distinguished touch.
