“Print is a future market,” said Claus Bolza-Schünemann, chairman of the board of Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) and president of Drupa 2016. He explained that the KBA company had consolidated in Europe after the financial crisis in 2008. Now we can and should begin looking ahead, he said, and this trade fair shows that the print industry is booming again. KBA, which also leads the global market for printing on tinplate and bottles, had already booked its first big sales successes during the first week of the fair.

Florian Kohler talked about visions and trends with Claus Bolza-Schünemann, who said: “Not only are the printers important to us, but also the needs of manufacturers of brand-name articles. We want to collaborate with the users to develop innovative printed products and thus support printers in their pursuit of new paths for printed communication.” He’s impressed by the richly colored papers in the Gmund Colors collection and by examples of their uses as packaging or brochures.

Like Gmund Paper, KBA showed a full spectrum of print products at Drupa: beginning in the morning when a consumer reaches for a tube of toothpaste or unpacks a new bottle of shower gel, continuing at lunchtime with the daily changing digitally printed menu, and ending with the printed label on a bottle in the evening. “Print is everywhere and it will also be ubiquitous in the future. Just as video telephony will never replace a personal handshake, so too the tactile interaction with a medium that sparks emotions will never be replaceable,” Kohler declared. He and Bolza-Schünemann agreed that the second half of Drupa is likely to lead to interesting discussions and promising new contracts.
